THE DEVIL’S ORCHID
A dog-eat-dog society which is speedily decaying into its cruelest reality; a hell’s twin town where human virtues fade away each passing day for instincts to take precedence. The only reason to live is to survive and the only way to survive is to develop carnivorous claws and canines. The cycle continues and a victim today becomes a perpetrator tomorrow. People not only grow but also evolve in character, making this lifestyle seemingly the only formula for survival. The life and adventures of Mr. Boman, right from his teenage years reflect this reality; be it from neighbours, the police, the university, hospital, civil servants, transporters and even friends and relatives. But is Mr. Boman just a victim? Find out as you journey through this world of ruthlessness, corruption, wickedness and strife; characterized by a gloomy atmosphere where everyone is potentially a threat to everyone.

This book is a precious stone. Your great talent cannot be disputed.
GOD DAMN! This is worse than a jungle… Though there is no country without corruption, strife, envy but the society your portray here is whew!
Your immense talent needs to go far. Great story, an extraordinary book.
Nigeria has always fascinated me from all the stories I read via mass media. This book has now elevated my fascination to obsession. I really need to have a feel of this society because the stories are unbelievable, yours is incredible. I doubt if anyone can portray this tale better than you just did.
A superb, superb, superb work here, Funom. Weldone
Sometimes, its good to judge a book by its cover. I loved the cover and when the book arrived from my order, the hard back impressed me. When I fixed my attention on the first page, I just couldn’t leave until the last. Man! Such an expressive, vivid, direct, powerful and detailed story about a society plagued with the struggle for survival. It is entertaining, informative and engrossing. You are a powerful writer, Funom and you have a powerful voice. I’m glad u have other works because I wasn’t happy, reading the last page of this piece. Great work Funom.
What a society! If this story is real, please that country should scrap its police. I just can’t get enough of this work and for d first time in my life I enjoyed reading about the shit people do. Intense! So so intense. I love the heat you created. You are an incredible writer with great talent.
I never believe I’ll enjoy reading about human endeavor so gross. JEEEZ! I’ll commit suicide if I find myself in such a society. Your style of writing, I believe, made it possible for the heat to come out in full from your story, yet fully enjoyed. I do hope this book is just an exaggeration to the actual reality of the Nigerian society, if not, I give it to all Nigerians surviving in such a society full of gruesome conditions. Welcome Funom, I’ve always known African writers, especially those from Nigeria to possess a strong voice. Yours, Funom is so strong here. I’ll definitely reach out to another work of yours
Nigeria, my Nigeria. You’ve well described how we in Nigeria live with each other and live through the challenges we face from human right issues to the lack of basic amenities and infrastructure. I don’t think there’s any existing piece which has in detail told this story like you did here.
Nigeria is indeed blessed with outstanding writers.
Nigeria is indeed blessed with great writers. From cyprain Ekwensi to Chinwe Achebe, then Wole Soyinka and then Chimamanda Adichie and now, here we are with Funom Makama. You are a great talent. This is your second piece I’m reading and they are all outstanding works. Your talent is undisputed and really, you should be up there with the best.
The Nigerian society is freaking complicated and gruesome. Damn! I can’t live there. Weldone Funom, this great craft you have will definitely not go unnoticed.
This is beyond excellent. It’s a fantastically outstanding book. Thank you Funom.
God! What a society! And humans still survive there? Now I understand why my president called some countries, shit holes. I was angry then but I know better now. A great piece Funom, keep the ink flowing.
Ruthlessness at its worst. What an exceptional piece! You did excellently well to maintain the tempo of tension and heat from start to finish. This society is indeed the devil’s orchid.
What an exceptional writer that you are! You brought out in the most raw and explicit form, the reality of the decaying Nigerian society. No one has told it better. I love the fact you dedicate entirely, 2 chapters to expose the ills of our police officers. I pray this book reaches the ends of the earth. YOU ARE INDEED TALENTED!
I’ll be damned! What a terrible society. Excellent writing Funom.
Nigeria, Nigeria, Nigeria! Crude stories can’t just stop coming out of that country. Just when u think you’ve heard or read the worse, something more devastating is revealed.
Great work Funom.
Despite the Disclaimer written in one of the first few pages of this book, the ills of this society cannot just get out of my mind. I took a nap 20 minutes ago and all I was doing was dreaming about this cruel society. Now I understand the high level of tenacity, Nigerians exhibit when they come over here, cologne, Germany. I’ve never seen a set of hardworking people like Nigerians, their level of patience is just unbelievable. There’s no way, one will pass through these cruelties without developing the kind of grit that Nigerians have.
Weldone Funom! What an intense read.
O my gosh! Do humans survive in this society?
I’m glad I read this book. Funom is indeed so talented.
You are an exceptional writer
This is sooooooooo Nigeria!
Great write, an awesome Author
Nigeria is blessed with talents like Funom but its too decayed to let him shine. Maybe that’s why Funom is exhibiting his brilliance by writing about Nigeria. What a weird boomerang.
I like your ending. No matter the gruesome nature of this society, there’s still good in it. Thank you Funom for taking us through the journey of challenges, faced by a common Nigerian in his society.
You are a master in your craft.
Cruelty at its worst. Intense, so intense. Great work Funom.
Great work! But I’m not comfortable, the way you expose the ills of our Nigerian society. You brought out these ills so raw. Great work though.
Stupid writer, why is it during buharis time you write this book? You are a fool. Allah will not let your propaganda prevail. If you like write more books on our problems, it is Nigeria you tarnish not the god sent-buhari.
Big fool!
The brilliance of this book masks the few typo mistakes I noticed… Your editor obviously did not do a thorough job for you.
I enjoyed it nonetheless. You’ve got talent
A few mistakes, here and there but all in all its a very good book. The story is an adrenaline stimulating one. Is the police in Nigeria this ruthless?
I really enjoyed this book.
Your voice is powerful, your story telling is unique, really, it is unique. Enjoyable read from beginning to the end.
Your country is really in a mess. thanks a lot for sharing some of what an average citizen passes through. Really an intriguing book
God damn! What a country, intriguing story indeed. Your books are really keeping me great company in my boredom from the compulsory “sit-at-home” precaution against the corona. Banking on your next book for yet another great time
Fantastic story, so raw, direct, plane and enjoyable to read. The Nigerian police is just whew! What a country. Your story is intriguing, no doubt! This is your second book I am reading. You have the talent in you Funom
GOSH! Is this how Nigeria is? Excellent writing.
Is the Nigerian society this gruesome or this is just fiction? Damn man, that country is doomed.
Just when I thought the American police is the worst in the world, then BOOM! Your book- “The Devil’s Orchid”
What a society!
You truly made my Lockdown worthwhile. Thank you so much for this wonderful piece. My friend read “The Bastard Citizen” and we are here competing on which story has the more gruesome events. I just can’t wait to read “The Bastard Citizen”. You are indeed an outstanding writer.
Thank you for keeping me busy during this lockdown. What a story. Unbelievable events from a society structured for the ‘survival of the fittests”. Great story of a terrible society
OMG! This book is awesome. You brought steam out of my head while reading it. What a society, what a country
You are highly underrated Funom. This is an outstanding piece. I read through the comments of your other books and I am not surprise. I will get another of your work.
This is a love story. Intense, thrilling, intriguing and full of suspense. Your police is wack; a lot of scavengers as citizens. Truly a delapitating society.
Great work Funom!
THIS IS AN AWESOME BOOK.
You make Nigeria seem so scary, damn!
Typical of an African society. I am Ghanaian and most of the terrible events portrayed in this masterpiece are not far fetched from the Ghanaian society. You are the best in your craft Funom.
My God! this society needs Jesus! Terrible, terrible, terrible!
Excellent writing Funom.
Funom, you’ve captured the ills and vices of my beloved country so well. You have great talent in writing and this makes you an outstanding Author.
Oladapo
Whew! Is Nigeria this terrible? I have a Nigerian Boyfriend and I was thinking of visiting, but I think I change my mind now.
you are a great Author, keep it up
When Nnamdi Kanu was calling that shithole of a country a Zoo, everyone was busy insulting him. That country is already messed up big time and the only solution is for its various entities to split and go their separate ways. Nice write Funom
Wow! Outstanding piece of work here. Like the previous comments, it’s all adrenaline from start to finish. I don’t think i, personally can survive in that kind of an environment. Terrible
the ruthlessness, injustices, conflicts, quarrels, scams, thefts are indeed intriguing and mind sapping but highly entertaining. What an interesting society you’ve exposed our minds to. You are an excellent writer, Funom.
‘Mad Abigail’ was just the final straw, you are so good funom.
For the fact you keep mentioning ‘Nigeria’ means the society you talk about in this book is not fictional. Are these events real? Are the police that bad? Are friends and relatives that cruel? Is corruption and theft that easy? Boy, my hormones were literally raging out while reading your book and I cannot remember ever having such an effect from a book read.
A genius you are, Funom.
i have visited Nigeria about 4 times and the longest period I stayed there was 5 months and I loved every experience. It is shocking to me to read this book with direct reference to a society in Nigeria. Anyway, I have not been to every corner of the country, neither do I know all its citizens. But, if the events you said in this book actually occurred, then it is rather unfortunate. Asides your book, I think I had mad fun and loved the people while there. Hopefully, I would love to return once again.
What a society. So cruel. Your story telling is amazing, Funom
Is this how the police in your country operate? just when I thought America has the worst police system, here is this story: The devil’s orchid! WOW! That society is indeed the devils orchid.
Great story telling Funom.
‘Mad Abigail’
‘Is the police your friend?’
‘Police is your friend’
‘transportation crisis’
My God! What a society! The height of it all, is the wedding celebration. Are you for real? Are these vices actually happening in Nigeria?
Unbelievable! Just unbelievable!
Great story Funom. The talent is in you.
Lol. So after all the things he sufferred, he joined in the vices. Great story Funom. The tempo was consistently maintained from chapter to chapter. This is similar to the bastard citizen but in another dimension. You are indeed a great story teller.
DAMN! I can’t live in that environment. I will kill myself. Great story Funom
Abigail is really mad. LOL.. Your police officers are beasts, great Job Funom, you are an amazing writer
An intriguing and thrilling story indeed. Weldon Funom
This too spills our adrenaline just as “The Bastard Citizen” I guess not a lot of people paid attention to this particular work of yours. You are amazing in writing. Keep it up Funom.
Another cracker from you Funom. Keep your pen rolling, you sure have the talent.

Reading from Ukraine and I must say that I enjoy this book. You are a great writer Funom
What a terrible society
I have now read all three of your fictions.. I am fully satisfied. You didn’t disappoint Funom. A great writer you are.
