The Bastard Citizen is a unique action-packed story and thriller that has evolved beyond its niche. This adrenaline-stimulator, from start to finish, focuses on the present day reality of the unbelievable challenges posed by a typical low-income Nigerian suburb, emitting all the tension associated with each social and clinical situation, the main character, simply called the doctor, faces while tackling the health issues of the locals. The boiling atmosphere surrounding him, fueled by corruption, greed, envy, hatred, sexual and emotional invitations, compounded by family and societal pressures, makes this story a high intensity drainer, wired by fast paced events exhibiting bad energies, rivalries and enmity at different levels.

Every challenge is a strong pathway to his surrender, the doctor has to face situations he has never imagined before and coming from the west where he trained as a medical practitioner, he is forced to climb the stairs of life where every step comes with its own thorns. The people need him but they need his patience the most. Can he cope? Will he give up? For how long will his tenacity stay unbroken?

More Books from the Author: The Soul Talkers, Biblical Love Psychology, The Devil’s Orchid, Cry of the Middle Belt, The Return of uthman Danfodio, Blessed Creation: A Christian Poetry Collection, Moonlight Christmas and other stories and The Tropical 20,000 series.

    FANTASTIC! FANTASTIC!
This story is an adrenaline machine, despite its emotional ending. Is this how a typical Nigerian suburb is?

  5. JESUS Mendossa on January 11, 2020 at 1:50 pm

  6. Raphael Thompson on January 11, 2020 at 1:56 pm

As a paediatric nurse, trained in New Zealand, I’ve worked in Nigeria before, from 2014 to 2016. I can relate with most of these harsh conditions. Private health care givers really face d uphill tasks of delivery appropriate services and also make their gains.

You’ve expressed this problem in the best way that no one else can. A 10/10 for me. This piece is just so perfect.

  7. Reitman R on January 11, 2020 at 2:03 pm

    GOD DAMN!
How luck has smiled on me coming across this piece is what I can’t explain. What a story! Such harsh conditions cannot be imagined in our clime. Thank u so much Funom, for sharing this jaw-breaking story.

  8. Mimi Bush from California on January 12, 2020 at 12:38 am

Amidst your all round brilliance of this masterpiece is your awesome description of a woman’s beauty and sexuality as you’ve shown with the nurse, the teenage patient and the doctor’s wife.

You’re just awesome. What a story!

  9. Liz Nkrumah on January 12, 2020 at 12:44 am

Nigerian writers don’t disappoint. I take my hat off for you Funom. The heat, tension, swift change of mood from this piece is out of this world. I hope this is not bourne out of your experience. Your talent shines brightly in this piece. Weldone sir.

  17. Larissa Freshmann on January 12, 2020 at 1:49 pm

You are good at portraying a powerful personality in your main characters: Don Cooker in the soul Talkers and now the doctor in this book. Your voice is powerful, your talent is immense. Keep writing, great Funom.

  18. Linda Steve on January 12, 2020 at 1:52 pm

  19. Rsphael Nightingale on January 13, 2020 at 12:28 am

  20. Nancy Wamanni on January 13, 2020 at 8:10 am

So, doctors are facing these challenges in the same Nigeria that I know? We all believe once a doctor, the person has made it in life. I hope these harsh conditions are not the reasons why they are jetting out of the country in a stampede rate. Thank you for opening my eyes to the cruel reality of your profession. Nigerians in general are indeed complicated beings.

  21. Binta Brown on January 13, 2020 at 8:13 am

God bless our doctors for all these struggles. Please don’t give up on your country. The ending is so emotional but cruel. If u all go, what will be the fate of the over 200 million people in the land? As intense as this book is, it really touched me.

  22. Dr. Marian Olarewaju on January 13, 2020 at 8:15 am

I’m a practising doctor in western Nigeria, you’ve said it as bluntly, undilutedly and as precisely as it should be. It’s high time Nigerians get to know that we are also Nigerians with serious challenges, the most of which comes from THEM, our patients.

  23. Franklin Bluebelt on January 13, 2020 at 8:16 am

The powerful personality of the doctor in this book is infectious.

  24. Hauwa Haruna on January 13, 2020 at 8:18 am

    This is an ‘out-of-this-world” piece.
A powerful story from an extraordinary writer.

  25. Dorathy Daine on January 13, 2020 at 4:12 pm

Very plain is your use of english, but your voice is indeed powerful. What a cracker!
That 25-page extract of yours gives a very very little idea of what this book has to offer, but it was a nice strategy though. Weldone Funom

  26. Gilead Baddamis on January 13, 2020 at 4:13 pm

I love Nigeria, especially its scary features. You just made it scarier and lovelier.
Can other works of yours be better than this? Let me try another

  27. Grace graceland on January 13, 2020 at 4:15 pm

A society full of weak but scary people. The mentality display too is awesome, the reasoning I observe among the people in this society is totally different from what is attainable here. An excellent prose Funom. You will go places with this one

  40. Reginald Claxton on June 15, 2020 at 2:08 pm

I prefer this book to “The Soul Talkers” As wonderful, artistic and surreal as “The Soul talkers” is, this book is a high tension, electrifying piece… My mind vibrated from start to finish. GOSH! What an environment.

You are an exceptional Indie author. It is just unfortunate that alot of indie Authors out there still give this business a bad reputation, but I can see that you are doing very well promoting your work with this site. The comments are true, so true. i will go for a second work of yours to establish the wonderful feeling I have about you. ‘The Soul Talkers” is tempting.

  50. MAry Ademuyiwa Olalade on June 16, 2020 at 11:06 am

  51. Amber Leigh on June 16, 2020 at 11:07 am

  52. Deborah Valera Lopez on June 16, 2020 at 11:10 am

This book can stimulate raging hormones, just to quash them in your last chapter with pity. Oh, this is one of the best books ever that I have read. You deserve more recognition and I am sure you will overcome this main challenge of being an indie Author. this is beyond exceptional Funom.

  57. Emily K. Buie on June 16, 2020 at 11:21 am

I never knew there could be a people who are so negligent of their health like the ones you portray in this book. I never knew there would be a place where a doctor will face severely harsh conditions even when it is clear he is making an impact. You did very well to write your story Funom. You are truly good in what you do.

    Emily

  58. Juliet Rankine on June 16, 2020 at 11:22 am

    Cheers!
    Laila

  68. Nigel Griffith on June 23, 2020 at 11:25 pm

Is this a true life story? It is so real that I picture you as the main character (since you are a doctor from your bio). God! I do not think I can survive these challenges. Is this why your country Nigeria, is backwards?

  69. Tammiewhites Adrian smith on June 23, 2020 at 11:28 pm

I love the way he is the perfect husband to his wife and how they communicate. I also like the way he empowered the women in that community with his awareness despite its hostility. though he finally left, I think he had an impact in their lives. Great story Funom. 75. Naa Larteley on June 23, 2020 at 11:45 pm

An incredible story! I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end with a ‘near-heart-attack’ composure. those people are just too controversial, I am glad the main character left. stimulating beginning, intense story and a epic end. You are just beyond words Funom

  76. Iqbal chorvada on June 23, 2020 at 11:46 pm

The Doctor should come to the UK and leave that environment before he dies an unfulfiled life. I love his supportive wife, so so cute.

  77. Penelope Mitchell on June 23, 2020 at 11:49 pm

Wow! What a nurse! If the nurse is really what is described in this book, then the doctor is really a disciplined and well trained man to resist her waves of attention seeking. His fights with the religious leaders is also epic. It’s been a while I have read a book so emotionally draining, just like this.

  78. Terry Ann Thomas on June 23, 2020 at 11:50 pm

Oh, poor doctor. He and his wife were even planning on inviting international bodies with their websites to help. What an unfortunate community. Is this how it is in Nigeria? If it were to be me, I will not hesitate leaving that toxic environment, we only have one life to live. What an amazing story telling.

  79. Lyn Shatontola on June 23, 2020 at 11:55 pm

I am short of words. Wow! Like wow! Is this how it is in Nigeria? I would have lost my mind if I were to be the doctor. Great story telling Funom, you are an amazing writer.

  80. Nomii Makhoba on June 23, 2020 at 11:58 pm

Oh no! so unfortunate. Over here in SA, we have a lot of Nigerian Doctors and we appreciate them a lot. My family doctor is Nigerian, the family doctor of my parents is Nigerian and they are amazing. From all indication, this doctor is a good one, please tell him to come to South Africa. A great story Funom, I enjoyed every bit of it.

  81. Aongola Simasiku on June 24, 2020 at 12:00 am

Toxicity at its peak, let the doctor please leave that environment. It is not worth it. I felt in fire throughout my read of your book. You are a top-notch Author Funom. Amazing, so amazing!

  82. JR. Tvar Warsaw on June 24, 2020 at 12:03 am

I am a doctor as well and it amazes me how a colleague will connive with quacks to bring down another doctor. It is so unfortunate. How is it possible to be a stranger in your own country? I really don’t get it? Is Nigeria a country of different independent regions, empires, islands? How is your political system like?

Amazing story, so amazing! Seriously, there is no error or wrong in this book. You did very well.

  83. Joy Treasure on June 24, 2020 at 12:06 am

Amazing, unfortunate, epic, entertaining, thrilling, powerful and full of emotions. I prefer this masterpiece to the “all-loved” The Soul talkers. You just have it in you Funom.

  84. Namugambe Milly on June 24, 2020 at 12:08 am

Why are you not promoting a movie of this story? It is more amazing than your other stories. the adrenaline it generates is so unbearable. You can write Funom, you can write indeed.

THIS SHOULD BE A FUCKING MOVIE FUNOM. I CANNOT BELIEVE HALF OF THE EVENTS IN THIS BOOK, IT IS NOT JUST POSSIBLE THAT THINGS LIKE THOSE DO OCCUR IN ANY PART OF THIS WORLD. YOUR BOOK IS FUCKING AMAZING. YOU ARE IN A WORLD OF YOUR OWN.

  86. Ashlee Gutierrez on June 24, 2020 at 12:13 am

Unbelievable events! Doctors are servants of humanity, but with the challenges in this book, I think the doctors in that environment are more of slaves to human ills and beggers of humanity. Gross! So gross!

    Great work Funom.

The Dark continent is at it again. there are some situations that can never change until the people themselves have a total reorientation and emancipation of themselves from their minds. It is difficult to deal with these kind of people even if you clearly wanna help them. You are an amazing writer, Funom.

  90. Rio Mekere Kaaheke on June 24, 2020 at 12:23 am

You can literally lose a leg by reading this story.. These people are indeed difficult to deal with. It is amazing how the doctor survived that environment. What a great story this is.

This is so revealing. I think the doctor has played his part, it is time for him to think for himself and family. It’s a pity such selfless service with good intention was frustrated. I don’t think there would have been a better way to relate this story to us. Funom, you are a genius

  98. Miriam Wilson on June 24, 2020 at 12:48 am

This community is so ridiculous and full of controversies.. A community without a doctor is a community at risk and here is one, chasing the very doctor who came from heaven with top quality training from Europe to help them. It is amazing to know what he had to put up with in order to stick to his quest to serve humanity. Really, really unfortunate.

You are indeed a world class Author Funom. The world will soon discover you.

    Miriam

  121. Brooke Sapp on June 24, 2020 at 8:55 pm

10/10 for the genius Funom Makama. Now I do not know which is the best for me. The soul Talkers or the BAstard Citizen?

  122. Idiala Curet on June 24, 2020 at 8:58 pm

Your creativity is first reflected on your choice of book titles: The Soul Talkers, The Bastard Citizen, The Devil’s Orchid.. Intriguing titles: I must say that the bastard citizen caught my mind first, but the overwhelming comments on the soul talkers page, made me purchase it first. Now, I must say that I am glad I read this book before the soul talkers. You have everything you need to succeed in this industry and I am very sure you will.
